World No Tobacco Day:

World No Tobacco Day

Every year on 31st May, World No Tobacco day is organized by WHO to raise awareness about the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption worldwide.

Tobacco use is a major issue that impacts all communities and impedes the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. It has direct harmful effects on its consumer’s health, but it also affects the country’s economy, environment, women’s health and childhood labour. It is one of the leading causes of cancer and responsible for over 1 crore deaths every year. Smoking among youth remains prevalent with more than 38 million young people aged between 13 and 15 using some form of tobacco. The tobacco industry targets youth for a lifetime of profits, creating a new wave of addiction.

The theme of WNTD 2024, “Protecting children from tobacco industry interference”, is focused on advocating for an end to the targeting of youth with harmful tobacco products.

Role of Homoeopathy in Allergic Bronchitis

0
Allergic Bronchitis

Allergic bronchitis refers to non infective, allergic inflammation of the lower respiratory
airways. The terms, allergic bronchitis and asthmatic bronchitis are now obsolete but many times are used in clinical practice.

Allergic bronchitis is a common condition found to occur in children who are susceptible. A
family history of allergic illnesses is often found in these cases. Exciting causes could be acute viral infections of the respiratory tract, exposure to environmental allergens, change of wether or exposure to colder climates, stress etc.

Usually it starts as nasopharyngitis which affects the trachea and bronchi later. Initially
there is running of nose or sneezing, throat pain or irritation and mild fever. After 4-5 days a dry, irritating cough with or without phlegm, tightness of chest, breathlessness and wheezing come up. Cough may last for about 2 weeks or more and is typically not relieve by antibiotics. Blood examination shows an increased number of eosinophils and raised IgE levels. The episodes maybecome recurrent and severe with time. Hospitalisation and oxygen therapy are needed in severe cases. Some children with allergic bronchitis suffer from asthma in adulthood.

Homoeopathy has an excellent scope in the treatment of acute episodes and chronic cure
of allergic bronchitis. Various medicines are available for the treatment of acute episodes with good success, even preventing hospitalisation. These medicines act faster, are gentler and do not leave any residual symptoms. They have no lingering side effects. Recurrent episodes are managed with deeper acting medicines which are prescribed after individual study of the case. They not only prevent further episodes but also treat other coexisting allergic disorders and prevent asthma.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder & Homoeopathy

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

ADHD refers to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This disorder is characterised by
inattention, impulsivity and extreme motor activity. The disorder usually starts before the age of 8 and may persist into the adolescence or even adulthood.

There are no known causes of ADHD, making it difficult to cure through elimination of the
causative factor. Role of heredity, and environmental and social factors is suspected but not
proved. Learning disabilities are commonly found with ADHD. An ADHD child may show
aggressive behaviour, substance abuse and delinquencies etc in adolescence and adulthood.

A child suffering from ADHD is unable to concentrate on any activity requiring sustained
mental effort, he is restless, fidgety, and impatient. In many cases, there is an incessant talking and exaggerated physical activity. Their scholastic performance is poor and they are unable to have successful personal and social interactions. They are a cause of concern for the parents as well as the teachers and society at large.

Pharmacological drugs used in the treatment of ADHD are useful in short term but are
known to have serious side effects. Their efficacy in the long term is highly questionable.
Behavioural therapy has shown to be beneficial yet it is not successful in many cases.

Homeopathy has been used in several cases of ADHD and has shown to have a good
scope. A study conducted in 2001 on children treated on homeopathic medicines vs Ritalin, has shown that 75% children on homoeopathy showed improvement as against 65% on Ritalin. Homeopathic medicines are individualised, have no side effects and the improvement is permanent. They are gentle and safe. Homeopathic medicines help tackling the learning disabilities as well. Appropriate homeopathic treatment helps prevent occurrence of co-morbid psychiatric illnesses. There has been definite improvement in the behaviour and performance of ADHD children on long term homeopathic treatment. Hence, Homoeopathy should be offered in such cases.
