World Breastfeeding Week 2025 – Awareness Initiative by Department of Paediatrics

On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week 2025, the Department of Paediatrics, JIMS Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, conducted a series of awareness programs on 7th August 2025 at various outreach villages—Madanpally, Mekalabanda Tanda, and Palmakula—focusing on Anganwadi centers as key points of community engagement.

The initiative was led by Dr. Bhavya Shikha, Associate Professor of Paediatrics, along with Dr. Shivani from the Department of Paediatrics and postgraduate students. The program commenced with a symbolic gesture marking the beginning of this vital awareness campaign. Key topics addressed during the sessions included the significance and objective of World Breastfeeding Week, types of breast milk, maternal nutrition and diet during breastfeeding, identifying hunger cues in infants, correct latching techniques, breastfeeding positions, and hygiene practices. The sessions were aimed at educating and empowering lactating mothers, pregnant women, and the local community on essential breastfeeding practices.

Adding further value to the program, Dr. Fatiha Sabha Sultana, Senior Research Fellow, shared insights from an ongoing collaborative research project with the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH). She highlighted the gap in breastfeeding knowledge among young mothers, often compounded by the lack of updated theoretical understanding among elder family members. Dr. Fatiha emphasized that the outcomes of this research will significantly benefit both lactating mothers and their newborns, providing evidence-based solutions to improve lactation practices.

The initiative received an encouraging response from the community and reinforced the importance of continuous education in promoting optimal breastfeeding practices for the well-being of both mother and child.
