1. What is BHMS degree?
BHMS stands for Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery. It is a 5 and half year course inclusive of one year of compulsory rotating internship. During the course of training, the student is acquainted with the clinical diagnosis of the patient and its applications as Homoeopathic system of medicine as enunciated a German Physician Dr Samuel Hahnemann , the founder of Homoeopathy
2. How is BHMS different from MBBS?
BHMS & MBBS course remains the same in terms of eligibility for admission, duration of course and Internship even the course contains and depth is almost the same as MBBS. Homoeopathy is a system of therapeutic and thus study of Homoeopathy is just the same like MBBS till the understanding of clinical diagnosis. It only differs in terms of Pharmacology & mode of application of the drugs.
The basic concept of disease in Homoeopathy is that each individual reacts peculiarly to his surroundings and various influences. The individual host response to various stimuli is taken into consideration while prescribing the medicines, Thus , Homoeopathy adopts an holistic approach to the treatment and stands curative in curable cases .
3. Is Homoeopathic degree similar to MBBS ?
Yes, both Homoeopathic degree BHMS and MBBS are same in terms of duration, Internship and even course content & text books are also the same to a great extent.
Secondly, NEET –an entry level exam for MBBS and BHMS is same. MBBS and BHMS , both are under-graduate degree and are equivalent. Both the qualifications allow use of the prefix “Dr”.
4. Is BHMS valid as a medical degree ?
Yes . it is a valid medical degree . Homoeopathy has been recognized by an Act of Parliament of India. BHMS degree awarded by Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences is included in the Second Schedule of Homoeopathy Central Council Act, 1973.& Thus a recognised qualification. As regards the KNR University of Health Sciences ,being newly established medical university in the year 2016-17, the process of recognition shall be initiated by the University ,once the First batch of BHMS pass out.
5. Is BHMS degree valid internationally?
In certain Asian countries it is valid. However in certain countries BHMS is a post graduate course after completion of medical degree. Further more in certain countries Homoeopathy is considered as Alternative Medicine.
6. What are the subjects taught in BHMS?
The BHMS course has following subjects. Human Anatomy, including Histology, genetics & embryology. Human Physiology and Biochemistry, Homoeopathic Pharmacy, Pathology and Microbiology, Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Surgery including Orthopedics, ENT, Ophthalmology and Dentistry, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Practice of Medicine including Paediatrics, Dermatology and Psychiatry. Community Medicine , Organon of Medicine and Homoeopathic Philosophy, Homoeopathic Materia Medica and Repertory.
The curriculum is divided into Pre clinical comprising of Ist BHMS of 1yr duration, Para clinical comprising of IInd BHMS of 1yr duration and Clinical comprising of IIIrd & Final BHMS of Two and Half yrs duration.
7. How are the subjects different from MBBS.
The main difference is besides all the subjects of MBBS course except Pharmacology, Homoeopathy graduates has to study these four additional subjects namely Homoeopathic Pharmacy, organon of Medicine and Homoeopathic philosophy, Repertory and Homoeopathic Materia Medica.
Homoeopathic Pharmacy deals with process of manufacturing and preparation of homoeopathic medicines . It also deals with the Various Acts related to Homoeopathic medicines and Quality standards thereof.
Organon of Medicine and Homoeopathic philosophy deals with the understanding of concepts related to disease and is like a user manual for understanding the Principles on which the science of Homoeopathy is based. It also gives an insight into terms like Individualization of patient and Holistic concept of disease.
Homoeopathic Materia Medica is a huge database of symptoms which have been obtained during pathogenetic trials of Homoeopathic drugs on healthy human beings .These drugs are procured from sources like plant, animal, mineral kingdom etc.
Repertory is an indexing system for application of various Homoeopathic medicines.
8. What are the job opportunities after BHMS ?
After BHMS,
a) You are entitled to start your private practice after obtaining a valid Registration from state Council of Homoeopathy.
b) Further studies namely Post Graduate degree MD ( Hom) and even PhD studies are also available.
c) You can pursue a Masters degree in Business Administration, MBA, specialization in Health and Hospital Management . Tata Institute of Social Sciences , Mumbai, Symbiosis University, Pune both an internationally accredited institutes runs medical course in India, where Homoeopathic graduates are eligible .
d) You can pursue a career in Research in Homoeopathy under the aegis of Central Council of Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH), an autonomous Council for research under Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.
e) BHMS is a professional Qualification, and aspire the graduates & Post-graduates for Self employment , besides their Job opportunities in Govt. Non-Govt, offers good opportunities in Corporate sectors like Air India, Railways etc for the welfare of their employees, even in multispecialty hospitals
9. What is the starting package for a BHMS student?
It ranges from 3 to 5 lakhs per annum. Higher packages are offered based on your specialized skills.
10. Is there Surgery involved in homoeopathy subjects?
Yes. BHMS students study the subject of Surgery during the Second & third year of the course , wherein they are exposed to the study of various surgical conditions, procedures and the indications thereof. So that the homoeopath can ascertain the scope of homoeopathic treatment like Tonsillitis can be very well treated by homoeoathy , Kidney stones are usually effectively treated by homoeopathy and recurrences can also be avoided by administering a constitutional remedy but the management depends upon the size , type and site of the stone and complications caused. Stag hornstone in kidney is a surgical condition and needs to be operated where as phosphate , calcium stones, less than 10m in size can be easily treated with homoeopathy along with auxiliary treatment.
Surgery is a specialized post-graduate course in allopathic system where as , homoeopathic council has not yet formulated such course, thus homoeopathic graduates cannot independently perform surgeries.
11. Is BHMS internationally acknowledged and valued?
Homoeopathy is introduced in more than 81 countries all over the World . There is resurgence of Homoeopathy in many countries especially in America, more countries are granting official recognition, new teaching institutions are coming up, research activities are being revitalized. It is said one out of four prescriptions in UK is for Homoeopathic remedies.
University of Leicester, United Kingdom offers a very popular course M Sc. in Molecular Genetics. Health Administration courses are offered by large number of Universities in Unites states.
12. Can the students have practical exposure at JIMS Hospital?
